| Since initiated in October 1997, FONADAL/FAO/UNDCP project BOL/C23 "Management, Conservation and Utilization of Forest Resources in the Cochabamba Tropics" has made good progress. A report shows that the project is currently carrying out its activities accordingly to the 1998 Operating Plan. This is being done within the context of a clear implementation strategy that includes criteria for selecting new beneficiaries and guidelines on how to do needs assessments to develop and implement projects with full participation of beneficiaries.
To date, the project is working with eight communities and associations with a total of approximately 300 families. Activities with another six groups are under development.
Additionally, the project has organized over 350 hours of training involving 1,000 participants ranging from field visits by farmers to the demonstration sites established during the first phase, field practises on different agroforestry and forest management activities, intensive training of project staff in rural extension and communication skills and events organized specifically for technicians from the recently created municipal forestry units.
Also, under the leadership of the Cochabamba prefecture, some 15 local institutions and projects are involved in preparation of a long-term forestry programme for the Cochabamba tropics. Also, a comprehensive monitoring system to track project activities is now functional.
Finally, preparations are under way to organise a Round Table Conference on the Forestry Programme for the Tropics, that will be held later this year in October. Local, regional and national authorities, producer associations and the international community are expected to attend.
