February 2013 - The training programme of the Counter Narcotics Police of Afghanistan's (CNPA) Mobile Training Team (MTT) was accredited by the Ministry of the Interior following a review of the Programme of Instruction by the Afghan National Police Central Training General Command on 27 February 2013.

Despite progress, Afghanistan’s total corruption cost increases to $3.9 billion

7 February 2013 - Since 2009, Afghanistan has made some tangible progress in reducing corruption in the public sector, as fewer people now report paying bribes. Nonetheless, the total corruption cost has increased by some 40 per cent over the last three years to reach $3.9 billion. Moreover, in 2012, half of Afghan citizens paid a bribe while requesting a public service, says a new joint High Office for Oversight and Anti-Corruption (HOO) and UNODC survey on trends and patterns of corruption in Afghanistan.

UNODC chief visits northern Afghan province of Badakhshan

UNODC Executive Director Yury Fedotov visited a poppy field in Badakhshan province, north-eastern Afghanistan and saw firsthand, the eradication by the Counter Narcotics Police of Afghanistan and the hardships faced by poppy crop growers. "This is my third visit to Afghanistan, but the first visit to one of the Afghan provinces", said Mr. Fedotov. In Badakhshan, the UNODC Executive Director also visited the Aga Khan Foundation alternative livelihoods project in Baharak district.

UNODC Chief visits transition house for women leaving prison in Kabul

30 May 2012 - Emini, a twenty-year-old girl, is one of 14 female residents of the House of Hope, a Kabul based transitional house for women leaving prison. Pardoned by President Hamid Karzai's Decree on 8 March, she is one of the newest inhabitants of the house.

Yury Fedotov, Executive Director of UNODC, and Afghan President Hamid Karzai today discussed plans to boost national and regional counter-narcotics efforts, as well as ways to stem drug production. stressing the principle of 'shared responsibility' as the only effective answer to the global menace of Afghan opiates, Mr. Fedotov highlighted that the Afghan Government and provincial governors had a crucial role to play.

UNODC chief launches Afghanistan country programme

Yury Fedotov, Executive Director of UNODC, together with Zarar Ahmad Moqbel Osmani, the Minister of Counter Narcotics of Afghanistan, launched the UNODC Country Programme for Afghanistan for the period 2012-2014 in Kabul yesterday. Primarily aimed at supporting the Government of Afghanistan in delivering an effective drugs and crime response, the programme focuses on establishing alternative livelihoods for households dependent on illicit crop cultivation, reducing drug demand and preventing and treating drug-related HIV.
