"HIV/AIDS prevention among injecting drug users (IDUs) in Visaginas"

Project goal and objectives

To implement HIV/AIDS prevention activities among IDUs in Visaginas and to improve targeted IDUs education.

Project objectives:

  1. To exchange needles and syringes and to disseminate disinfectants in order to reduce the risk of infections transmission through needles and syringes.
  2. To perform HIV tests for drug users and their contact persons.
  3. To attract 30 new clients and expand the use of cabinet services among risk group members.
  4. To sustain staff team.
  5. To publicise the project and to monitor project's effectiveness.
Results

Activities conducted during the project implementation:

1. Used needles and syringed exchanged and disinfectants for IDUs distributed - aiming to reduce the risk of infection transmission through syringes and needles.
2. Drug users and their contact persons were HIV tested.
3. Attracted new risk group members to the cabinet;
4. Additionally trained personnel;
5. Conducted project publicizing and effectiveness monitoring.

 

  • Number of regular clients - 42;
  • Number of new clients per last month -10;
  • Number of distributed syringes per month - 850;
  • Number of distributed syringes per person per month - 30;
  • Number of performed HIV tests - 124;
  • Number of positive HIV tests - 1.
