(posted 16/03/2010)

In March 2010, four Lithuanian organizations were awarded with UNODC grants for implementation of HIV/AIDS prevention projects:

  • Lithuanian Red Cross Society Visaginas Committee project "HIV/AIDS prevention and care among injecting drug users (IDU's) in Visaginas";
  • Alytus policlinic Mental Health Center project "Establishment of a cabinet for pharmacotherapy with methadone in Alytus City";
  • Charity and support foundation "Garstyčios grūdas" project "Be safe and protect others";
  • Kaunas Remand Prison project "Improvement of HIV/AIDS and drug use prevention among IDUs in Kaunas Remand Prison".

Two of the new projects will educate prisoners in Alytus Correction House and Kaunas Remand Prison about reduction of HIV and other health risks for drug users. Other projects will support new services for IDUs in community settings: starting of pharmacotherapy with methadone in Alytus City and a needle and syringe programme and peer-driven interventions in Visaginas city.

The projects were selected from 12 applications received within this call for grants. All project proposals were assessed by the expert committee representing the key UNODC partners in Lithuania: Ministry of Health, Drug Control Department, Prison Department, Centre for Communicable Diseases and AIDS, and Vilnius Centre for Addiction Disorders. The total amount awarded under this call is LTL 176,505.84.
