Grooming could be defined as

Online grooming is when some people on the Internet will ask for your "nudes" (sexualized material), these people could be strangers, friends or celebrities.

What you need to know 

  1. They don’t look like “groomers” they look a normal person
  2. They may be generous with their time and money and pretend to be your “friend”
  3. They will take time to build your trust request small things to begin…
  4. And then ask for more sexual content
  5. They may ask you to keep your conversations secret
  6. Get you to share personal information
  7. If ANYONE starts making sexual comments or asks for images of a sexual nature, it’s time to say GOODBYE
  8. BEWARE THE SHARE!

Sexting could be defined as

Sexual Extortion of children, also known as “Sexting” is the sharing of sexual images via mobile phones or other electronic devices, is legal if it occurs between consenting adults. But it is illegal if it occurs between children and young people. In the case of one or both of the participants being underage, there could be criminal consequences to both the creator of sexual image and the receiver. This could be considered a criminal offense.

What to be aware of when sexting ?

  1. If you or your friend are under 18, and you share sexualised images of each other, it is a criminal offense
  2. If you are under 18, take a sexual photo or video of yourself, and share it with someone of any age, it is a criminal offence
  3. If you are over 18 and share a sexual image of someone under the age of 18 with someone of any image, it is a criminal offense
  4. BEWARE THE SHARE

IMAGE BASED ABUSE

Image-based abuse (IBA) happens when an intimate image or video is shared without the consent of the person pictured. This includes images or videos that have been digitally altered (using Photoshop or specialised software).

It is more common than you think, but if you find yourself in this situation:

  1. This is not your fault, you have done nothing wrong
  2. You maybe feeling distressed
  3. DON’T WORRY, there is a way out!
  4. Tell a parent, guardian, or an adult your trust
  5. Contact the relevant authority on the links below
  6. You will be provided support 
  7. The situation will be resolved 

WHAT If?

TIPS

  1. Avoid and ignore, preferably don’t accept anyone with less mutual friends
  2. Don’t engage in even non-private conversations, this is how they start grooming
  3. Don’t believe in fake promises, such as more cash or gifts

YOUR FRIEND ASKS FOR A SEXUALLY EXPLICIT IMAGE OF YOU

TIPS

  1. Explain to them the illegality of this act, especially if one of you or both are underage
  2. Convince them of this being a bad idea, especially if one or both of you are underage
  3. If they persist or force, without being understanding, report the case to one of your parents or an adult you trust

YOUR GF/BF TRIES TO GET YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN A SEXUAL ACTIVITY OVER WEBCAM OR VIDEO CALL

TIPS

  1. Try telling them clearly that you are not comfortable doing that
  2. Try moving away from the topic, instead talk about something entirely different
  3. Explain the illegality of this action and potential harmful consequences

By utilizing the Beware the Share slogan, UNODC aims to raise awareness among minors, who may be unaware of the long-term and short-term consequences of engaging in dangerous and sometimes illegal behaviours online that can result in negative consequences mentally, socially and legally for others and themselves.

Beware the Share campaign is designed to help minors think twice before sharing any potentially harmful content with friends or strangers.
