| | The sustained growth of non-coca crops in the 1986 - 1997 period shows the change experienced in the Chapare. The surface under licit cultivation, as can be seen in the table, has increased with 137% in the last eleven years. Surveys was carried out at different times and by different sources. In 1986, CIDRE made a study called "A Monograph on the Tropics". The National Statistics Institute (INE), made surveys in July 1993, July 1994 and October 1997. The 1995 figures were estimated by the technical teams of the alternative development programme.
According to these surveys, growth of non-coca crops, between 1986 and 1993, reached 32%. In the period 1993 to 1994 there was 15% increase, while the increase in 1994 and 1995 reached 9%. The following year, growth reached 20%. Finally, in the 1996 - 1997 period there was a 4.5% increase.
Worth mentioning is that the total surface cultivated has increased for all crops, apart from banana and rice.
In the case of banana, crops decreased as a result of the Black Sigatoka disease. This disease will affect crops for 1998 as well. However, with disease control programmes, and the use of more resistant brands, as well as an improvement in crop control, it is estimated by the alternative development programme that the total area under banana cultivation will increase substantially during 1999.
