| � The Andean Community, in a meeting of the X Andean Presidential Council in Guayaquil on April 4-5, prepared a declaration stating its determination and commitment to confront the international drug problem.
The fight against drug trafficking must be waged through shared responsibility and both supply and demand must be tackled in an integrated and egalitarian fashion, concluded the joint declaration signed by the presidents of Bolivia, Hugo Banzer; Colombia, Ernesto Samper; Ecuador, Fabian Alarcon; Peru, Alberto Fujimori; and Venezuela, Rafael Caldera.
COORDINATION
The dignitaries met to assess processes of regional integration and perspectives for expanding the group. The declaration stressed the importance of coordination within the Andean community regarding the international drug problem. It also emphasized the need to reach agreements on, and assess multilateral nature of, anti-drug policies.
MULTILATERAL EVALUATION
Members of the Andean community expressed their total support for the Hemispheric Alliance that seeks to develop, within the framework of the Organization of the American States Inter-American Commission for Drug Abuse Control (CICAD/OAS), a unique and objective process of governmental and multilateral evaluation of national and international drug control actions.
UNITED NATIONS SPECIAL SESSION
The Andean Community also reiterated the importance of the forthcoming (June) United Nations General Assembly Special Session on the world drug problem, and renewed the intention of Andean presidents to participate in the event.
Finally, the Andean presidents stressed the importance of reaching agreements in the preparatory meetings on demand reduction, alternative development, judicial cooperation, and the control of chemical precursors and money laundering.
