Advancing the role of women in the police service of the Kyrgyz Republic

Issyk Kul, Kyrgyz Republic, August 2014. From 14 to 23 August 14, 2014, UNODC brought together 30 senior managers of police departments from 14 districts and major cities throughout the Kyrgyz Republic and regional representatives of the Kyrgyz Republic's Police Women Association for a training on gender sensitivity.

Divided in two groups, the five day training course offered the participants an opportunity to learn about women's rights and gender equality issues in international conventions; national legislation and public policy to achieve gender equality; and gender equality as a key objective of police reform in the country. During the training, the participants developed plans of action to increase gender representation in the police in the Kyrgyz Republic.

The training course was developed by a team of national trainers from the Police Academy of the Kyrgyz Republic within the framework of the UNODC Project "Peace and Trust: Equal Access to Law Enforcement and Justice", which is funded by the UN Peace Building Fund. Advancing the role of women in the police service of the Kyrgyz Republic is a major goal of this project.
