Strategic Trade and Export Control is High on the Agenda of the Port Control Units in Kazakhstan

From 22-26 July 2019 UNODC Regional Office for Central Asia conducted a National workshop on awareness raising in the Strategic Trade and Export Control in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, under the UNODC-WCO (World Customs Organization) Global Container Control Programme (CCP). The workshop is a part of series of capacity building measures focused on raising the awareness, strengthening knowledge and skills of the officers from the State Revenue Committee of the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Kazakhstan (SRC), Port Control Units, in strategic trade and export control and use of modern Customs control techniques.

During opening ceremony, Mrs. Sara Abylkasimova, Deputy Head of the Training Centre of the State Revenue Committee of the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Kazakhstan, expressed appreciation to UNODC for conducting the training activity at the Training Center, and encouraged participants to build a constructive dialogue with UNODC experts considering the importance of strategic trade and export control for Kazakhstan to safeguard international and national security.

Mr. Batyr Geldiyev, UNODC Regional Programme Coordinator, stressed that the possibility of sensitive strategic commodities ending up with criminal, extremists and radicalized non-state actors, not only threatens the rule of law but also jeopardizes the well-being of societies and their citizens.

During the training, the participants had opportunity to learn about international control principles and implementation, embargos/sanctions regimes, controlled equipment and agents, Strategic Trade and Export Control perspectives from different countries and conduct practical exercises on the risks profile development and analysis of consignment documents.

The CCP Regional Segment for Central Asia is funded by the Government of Japan and the U.S. Department of State Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), and the Export Control and Related Border Security (EXBS) Programme.
