UNODC Hands Over Contraband Enforcement Kits to Law Enforcement Agencies in Central Asia

Under the component, "Countering synthetic drugs and new psychoactive substances in Central Asia" of the UNODC Programme for Central Asia (2015-2019), law enforcement agencies of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan were provided with nine sets of contraband enforcement kits for amount of over USD 160 000

Equipment hand-over ceremonies were held in September and October 2018 in Astana, Bishkek, Dushanbe, and Tashkent. Recipients were counter-narcotics departments of the Ministries of Interior, Drug Control Agencies, Customs Services and Security Services of the Central Asian countries.

The contraband search kits are used in search, detection and identification of contraband by police, customs, border forces and other law enforcement agencies.  Each kit contains a fiberscope, a hand-held density meter, an inspection probe, various tools, inspection mirrors, a laser measurer, a tablet, and a digital camera.

The provided equipment, which adds to previously supplied materials, a series of training courses and other technical assistance provided under the component in 2017, will facilitate increased law enforcement capacity of the countries of the region in countering synthetic drugs and new psychoactive substances.

National beneficiaries appreciated the importance of the technical assistance and noted the need for continuing and expanding the work by UNODC in supporting efforts of the countries of the region to fight the emerging issues of new psychoactive substances.

The component on "Countering synthetic drugs and new psychoactive substances in Central Asia" is implemented under the Sub-Programme 1 of the UNODC Programme for Central Asia (2015-2019) and generously funded by the Government of Japan.
