UNODC Hands Over Equipment to Support Border Security in Tajikistan

Equipment worth USD 65,800.00 was handed over to the Border Forces of the State Committee for National Security of Tajikistan on 19 November 2018. Passport readers, document authentication devices, IT equipment, photo and video cameras were provided with a purpose of enhancing the capacity of key border crossing points at the Tajik-Kyrgyz and Tajik-Uzbek border.

Mr. Rajabali Rahmonali, Colonel General, Commander of the Border Forces, and Mr.  Mr. Yusuf Kurbonov, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) International Program Coordinator of the Border Security and Cross-Border Cooperation component, signed an official equipment handover document.

The equipment aims to support cooperation along and across borders and enhance Border Force officer's capacity on combating drug trafficking, illegal migration and other transnational organized crimes. Border Forces of the State Committee for National Security of the Republic of Tajikistan cooperates with UNODC to establish and enhance Border Liaison Offices (BLO) among others. BLOs in Central Asia is expected to play an essential and expanded role in the future as part of a sustained regional response to illicit trafficking.

Mr. Rajabali Rahmonali, Colonel General, expressed appreciation on UNODC cooperation with Border Forces and its achievement on enhancing BLOs' capacity, as well as its support on enhancing Tajik-Afghan border during the courtesy meeting with Mr. Yusuf Kurbonov prior to the handover ceremony. Parties discussed security situation in Afghanistan and reiterated the importance of enhancing Tajik-Afghan border.

The handover is a part of the «Countering trafficking of Afghan opiates via the Northern Route by enhancing the capacity of key border crossing points (BCPs) and through the establishment of Border Liaison Offices (BLOs)» component of the Sub-Programme 1, UNODC Programme for Central Asia 2015-2019, and is funded by the Government of Japan.
