UNODC in Tajikistan: New Manual Helps Law Enforcement Enhance Investigation Skills to Fight Human Trafficking

Dushanbe, Tajikistan, 30 June 2020 – Today UNODC completed a three-day online training on the investigation of human trafficking cases for investigators from central and district prosecution offices in Tajikistan.

UNODC partnered with the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Tajikistan to gather a first batch of 12 investigators with experience in handling criminal cases related to trafficking in persons and to pilot with them a new training manual developed for handling of trafficking in persons cases.

“The trainees had an opportunity to learn new methods and techniques for trafficking in persons investigations, which will help them to do their job and help eliminate crimes related to human trafficking” – stressed Mr. Gafuriyon Abdugaffor, representative of the General Prosecutor’s Office.

Each module of the manual offers guidance and promising practices to guide human trafficking investigations in line with international standards and national legislation. The training course is expected to be further integrated in the curriculum of the General Prosecutor’s Center of Excellence and contribute to a significant difference

to the work of investigators in handling the human trafficking crimes. Similar courses are being developed for police investigators and judges to promote better access to justice for victims of this crime within the framework of the 2019-2021 National Action Plan to counter human trafficking in Tajikistan.

This training effort is part of a broader initiative to strengthen the law enforcement response to trafficking in persons in Tajikistan with support from the US State Department Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs.
