Making the world a better place by reading a story? Yes, it works!

Winners of UNODC's creative reading competition across the Middle East and North Africa

In response to the need for innovative and entertaining educational methods for children and youth to learn during the pandemic, UNODC's E4J initiative held a regional creative reading competition with the energetic Zorbs characters.

The winners of the competition have produced videos and animations reflecting the “Do It Like The Zorbs”story in their own way while sharing the values of respect, tolerance, integrity, justice and fairness. Winners were chosen based on the simplicity, creativity and passion of their submission. Such efforts help children and youth become active champions for positive change and support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as SDG 4 “Quality Education”, SDG 5 “Gender Equality”, SDG 10 “Reduced Inequalities”, and SDG 16 “Partnership for the Goals”.

Background on the competition

UNODC launched a creative reading competition across the Middle East and North Africa. With the Education for Justice (E4J) initiative and the energetic Zorbs alien characters, participants could help many children escape boredom during COVID-19 and learn about the values of respect, tolerance, integrity, justice and fairness!

How to win? Easy! Participants were requested to read the “Do It Like The Zorbs” story in their own way, make a video, a song, an animation, a dance or any form of art.

Like it is for the Zorbs, the sky is the limit!

We wanted participants to speak their dialect and to have as much fun as the children will when seeing them tell the story!

The book and more about The Zorbs could be found in the Fun Corner.

Winners were chosen based on simplicity, creativity and passion!

National and regional winners were selected in August 2020.
