Possible class structure
This section contains recommendations for a teaching sequence and timing intended to achieve learning outcomes through a three-hour class. The lecturer may wish to disregard or shorten some of the segments below in order to give more time to other elements, including introduction, icebreakers, conclusion or short breaks. The structure could also be adapted for shorter or longer classes, given that the class durations vary across countries.
- 0 - 10 mins » Briefly introduce topic, session learning outcomes and outline structure.
- 10 - 20 mins » Exercise 1: Mobile phone poll (or alternative plickers equivalent).
- 20 - 60 mins » Discuss international human rights framework. Discuss Case study 1: Non-refoulement.
- 60 - 65 mins » Short break.
- 65 - 120 mins » Discuss regional human rights framework. Discuss one or more of the following case studies: Case study 2: Prohibition of torture in an African context; Case study 3: Inhuman treatment; Case study 4: Distinguishing torture from other forms of ill-treatment; Case study 5: Admissibility of evidence obtained through torture.
- 120 - 125 mins » Short break.
- 125 - 145 mins » Discuss armed conflict
- 145 - 165 mins » Discuss punishment of terrorists by death penalty . Discuss Case studies 6: 'Death row phenomenon' and solitary confinement.
- 165 - 175 mins » Exercise 2: Mobile phone poll (or alternative plickers equivalent).
- 175 - 180 mins » If appropriate, introduce the assessment questions with relevant marking criteria.
