This section provides suggestions for post-class assignments for the purpose of assessing students' understanding of the Module. Suggestions for pre-class or in-class assignments are provided in the Exercises section.
- Critically assess in what ways terrorist activities may erode fundamental rights.
- Restrictions on fundamental freedoms in a terrorism/counter-terrorism context are sometimes necessary. Discuss, with examples.
- What is the difference between exercising religious rights in forum internum and in forum externum? Which of these two rights may be restricted and in what circumstances?
- Can terrorism be prevented through education and the promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms? Is so, how? If not, then why not?
- Compare and contrast United Nations and regional approaches to the protection of fundamental freedoms. In what ways are they similar and different? Which of the four fundamental freedoms you consider to be the most important in a counter-terrorism context, and why?
- Why is the principle of non-discrimination so important to counter-terrorism efforts? What negative consequences may follow if it is violated? Give examples.
Exercises 1-3 could also be adapted to form the basis of assessment questions/exercises.
