Possible class structure
This section contains recommendations for a teaching sequence and timing intended to achieve learning outcomes through a three-hour class. The lecturer may wish to disregard or shorten some of the segments below in order to give more time to other elements, including introduction, icebreakers, conclusion or short breaks. The structure could also be adapted for shorter or longer classes, given that the class durations vary across countries.
- 0 - 10 mins » Briefly introduce topic, session learning outcomes and outline structure.
- 10 - 30 mins » Discuss key concept of 'victim'. Discuss Case study 1: 'Victims' of terrorism. Watch Video 1: New guidelines for terror victims (for videos see section on Additional teaching tools) .
- 30 - 55 mins » Discuss effects of terrorism (trauma and victimology perspective). Discuss Case study 2: Broader impact of terrorism on victims.
- 55 - 60 mins » Short break.
- 60 - 75 mins » Discuss justice (victim's perspective) and victim recognition.
- 75-100 mins » Discuss international/regional legal frameworks. Discuss Case studies 3: The right to an effective remedy within the African human rights system. Watch Video 2: UN expert on counter-terrorism urges more international action for victim's rights, their protection and compensation.
- 100 - 125 mins » Discuss criminal justice instruments, restitution and non-recurrence. Watch Video 3: Victims before International Criminal Courts.
- 125 - 130 mins » Short break.
- 130 - 155 mins » Discuss national approaches (criminal justice and victims' national assistance schemes) and challenges in securing reparation. Conduct Exercise 1: National legislative systems' provision for victims. Watch Video 4: Surviving Terrorism: Victims' Voices from Norway.
- 155 - 175 mins » Conduct Exercise 2: Reflective writing.
- 175 - 180 mins » If appropriate, introduce the assessment questions with relevant marking criteria.
