The UNODC counter-piracy programme was launched in May 2009 with initial funding from the Federal Republic of Germany and France. Since then, the programme has received substantial funding from the European Commission. Other donors include Australia, Canada and the United States of America.

Partners

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is a leading authority in maritime security and safety. IMO isĀ  partnering with UNODC to improve regional counter-piracy legislation. IMO works on the implementation of international laws and agreements.

The Eastern Africa Peace Institute Trust ensures that the pirates have a proper defence.

The Muslim Education and Welfare Association (MEWA) provides basic supplies for pirates and suspected pirates.

INTERPOL provides help in identifying pirates suspect and in evidence gathering.
