In close consultation with the countries in the region, UNODC developed a Regional Programme for Eastern Africa. This programme, entitled "Promoting the Rule of Law and Human Security in Eastern Africa", started in 2016 and will run up to 2021. Its overall objective is to support the efforts of Member States in the region to respond to evolving human security threats, with a focus on achieving a tangible impact.

Anti-Corruption

Corruption poses significant threats to countries around the world. It weakens institutions, erodes trust and threatens the economy. The UNODC Eastern Africa office works with the countries in the region to help in the fight against corruption. We currently focus on two areas; public procurement and whistle-blower protection.

Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice

The Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme (CPCJ) aims to strengthen the rule of law in Member States in Eastern Africa. We do this through prevention of crime and promotion of effective, fair, humane and accountable criminal justice systems.

Terrorism Prevention

Threats and challenges posed by terrorism affect security and stability in Eastern Africa. UNODC supports and assists Member States in this region via the Terrorism Prevention Programme. Our objective is to strengthen a functional and effective criminal justice system, able to prevent, suppress and prosecute acts of terrorism.

Transnational Organized Crime

Organised crime, including transnational organised crime, illicit trafficking and illicit drug trafficking pose a serious threat to human security in Eastern Africa. Through the Transnational Organised Crime and Illicit Trafficking Programme, UNODC supports and assists Member States in the region to effectively prevent, suppress and prosecute these crimes.

Prevention of Drug Use, Treatment and Care of Drug Use Disorders and HIV and AIDS Prevention and Care (Health and Social Development Programme)

UNODC’s Health and Social Development arm addresses drug use and HIV prevention, treatment, care and support among member states. This is achieved through adoption and implementation of comprehensive, evidence-based, gender and youth responsive national and regional responses.

Global Programmes

Container Control Programme

The Container Control Programme was developed by UNODC and the World Customs organization. The purpose of this is to assist governments to establish effective controls over the flow of sea containers and air-cargo traded through their ports, dry-ports, airports and border crossings.

Global Maritime Crime Programme

The Global Maritime Crime Programme was established in response to Security Council resolutions calling for a concerted international response to address piracy off the Horn of Africa. Our Indian Ocean West and Gulf of Aden and Red Sea teams are based at the Regional Office for Eastern Africa in Nairobi.

Crimes that affect the environment

"Wildlife and forest" refers to all plants and animals (flora and fauna) including birds and marine species, as well as timber and non-timber forest products. Broadly speaking "wildlife and forest crime" is the illegal exploitation of the world's wild plants and animals.
