UNODC -- 1999 Field Office Report
"Cannabis cultivation is widely spread in Egypt in the Sinai and to a limited extent in Upper Egypt although exact data are difficult to establish. There is, however, agreement that cannabis and opium poppy are cultivated in the Sinai and that there is potential for expansion. Cannabis is cultivated all year round in northern Sinai, opium poppy fields are concentrated in the south with only one cultivation cycle in winter. However there is no exact information or knowledge on the socio- economic systems for the Bedouin tribes and families living in the areas of illicit cultivation in the Sinai."
