26 June 2007: International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking
The United Nations General Assembly in 1987 decided to observe 26 June as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and co-operation to achieve an international society free of drug abuse. Every year a theme is selected to mark the occasion. This year the theme is
"Do drugs control your life? Your life. Your community. No place for drugs".
In order to commemorate this occasion, United Nations Office on Drugs and crime (UNODC) in partnership with Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (MSJE), Government of India has organized a series of events to mark this occasion and highlight issues around drugs and HIV related vulnerabilities. The aim is to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represent to society. No individual, family or community is safe where illicit drugs take control. MSJE and UNODC recognize the importance of the community as key stakeholders and thus seek to establish partnerships with the public and civil society representatives to inspire people and mobilize support for drug control.
