Prison Reforms in Resource Poor Settings

350 representatives from about 50 countries, including  representatives from UN- Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO), World Health Organisation (WHO), International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), UNODC among other international organizations, came together at the 10th International Corrections and Prisons Association (ICPA) AGM and Annual Conference, to discuss prison reforms.

Dr. Jayadev Sarangi, Prison Expert, UNODC ROSA, shared his views on the UNODC, ROSA experience on prisons in the conference on "Prison Reforms in Resource Poor Settings- South Asia Experience" . It was presented in a session on " A Decade of Lessons Learnt: The South Asia Experience" on 28th October 2008.

Participants felt positive towards implementation of various prison reform initiatives, including reduction of prison overcrowding, alternate sentencing, and improvement of general health and hygiene etc., with the support of international agencies.

The delegates appreciated the UNODC ROSA prison intervention toolkit and expressed interest to use it in their settings. They were also  keen to partner with ROSA for capacity building and creation of knowledge products in their respective areas.
