International Conference of Jurists on Public Private Partnerships in Promoting Rule of Law and Human Rights

13-15 December 2008


The International Council of Jurists, the Indian Council of Jurist and the All India Bar Association is hosting an International Conference of Jurists on public private partnerships in promoting rule of law and human rights in New Delhi from 13 - 14 December and in Agra on 15 December 2008.

The Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has kindly agreed to inaugurate the Conference on December 13, 2008 at 10 a.m. at Plenary Hall of Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The Hon'ble Chief Justice of India, Mr. Justice K.G. Balakrishnan will preside over the Conference. Hon'ble Dr. H.R. Bhardwaj, Union Minister for Law & Justice, and Hon'ble Mr. Justice Awl Al-Khasawneh, Vice-President, International Court of Justice, will be Special Guests of Honour.

During the event, UNODC will be conferred with the "International Jurists Award 2008" by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, and it will be received by Dr. Sandeep Chawla, Director, Division for Policy Analysis and Public Affairs, UNODC, on behalf of Mr. Antonio Maria Costa, Executive Director, UNODC. A high profile jury selected UNODC to receive this award for the organization's unique contribution in the field of combating organized crime and promoting the rule of law.

More than 400 delegates across the world including Hon'ble Chief Justices and other Judges, Law Ministers, Parliamentarians, Bar leaders, Chief Executive Officers of multinational corporations and law firms, bureaucrats, representatives from financial corporations, from India and abroad, are coming together on this occasion to discuss a wide range of issues.

UNODC Regional Office for South Asia is conducting two working sessions, namely, Combating Drug Trafficking, Consumption and Related Problems and the International Laws to Curb Human Trafficking.

On 13 December 2008, the working session no. 2 on "Combating Drug Trafficking, Consumption and Related Problems" from 1245 - 1400 hrs (Hall No. 4) Vigyan Bhawan, will be conducted by UNODC.

The Chair and Speakers are as follows:

Speakers -

1. Mr. KC Verma- Secretary (Security) Ministry of Home Affairs
2. Mr. Sandeep Chawla - Director, Policy Analysis and Public Affairs, UNODC 
3. Dr. Rajat Ray - Chief, Drug De-toxification Centre, AIIMS

On 14 December 2008, the working session no. 18 on "International Laws to Curb Human Trafficking" from 1115 - 1245 hrs (Hall No. 4), Vigyan Bhawan will be conducted by UNODC.

The speakers for this session are as follows:

2. Ms. Manjula Krishnan - Economic Advisor, Ministry of Women and Child Development
