UNODC's advocacy facilitated the inclusion of content on substance abuse in the MHRD AEP co curricular module. The accompanying FAQ book has 25 questions out of a 100 on alcohol and substance abuse
The Co Curricular Approach - This aims at introducing Drugs and substance abuse issues in schools through modules developed by UNODC, which incorporate communication & inter-personal skills, decision-making and critical thinking skills and coping and self management skills on topics like prevention of drug abuse and HIV/AIDS. Under this component, UNODC is supporting 250 schools across the country to undertake various activities.
35 Resource Persons who had prior experience of the Adolescent Education and HIV programmes from across the country have been trained on the module. They have in turn trained nearly 400 nodal teachers from 200 schools so far.
Teachers have been conducting advocacy workshops with key stakeholders within the school and will shortly start transacting the modules with their students.
The schools will take the initiative forward by commemorating days like June 26th, the International Day against Drug Abuse and Trafficking, 1st December, World AIDS Day etc.
Some schools have also set up I Decide Clubs, and will organize events on issues of Drugs and HIV.
