Testimonial of Meralis Khardesaw, Peer Trainer, Meghalaya

I attended the training on 'Primary Prevention on Drug Abuse and HIV/AIDS' organised by Indian Red Cross Society, Shillong, Meghalaya Before the training I had little knowledge regarding the prevalence of Drug use or about HIV/AIDS. But today, I can render my services to the people and the community as a whole.
Meralis Khardesaw

From the training, I also learned the art of communicating with others and this helped me in many ways to talk to the people and the community. Before I was this shy college going girl, confining herself to her group. But now as a peer trainer, my confidence has increased but also my enthusiasm to meet people.

Though the issue of Drug Use is not so much prevalent in the area of Mawkyrwat but the rise in alcoholism is very much there. I have encountered many alcoholics who have been victims to many problems due to their bad habits. After being informed the users were happy and told me that they will try to give up the habit as it was destroying them and their family. We sensitized the youths of some locality on HIV/AIDS. They were very spontaneous on receiving the information and they actively reached out to their other peers.

This is an achievement for me to see the spontaneity of the people and the community to come forward and be informed.
