UNODC is cosponsor of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS - UNAIDS

8th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP), Colombo,
Sri Lanka, 19 - 23 August 2007

The HIV/AIDS pandemic is an exceptional threat to human security around the world. A comprehensive response involving, good governance and the empowerment of all sections of society, greater involvement of people living with HIV/AIDS, scaling-up of the prevention and treatment measures, is needed for adequately dealing with the HIV/AIDS situation. In South Asia, the feminization of poverty and allied factors like gender discrimination, illiteracy and unemployment, and their nexus with violence, migration and trafficking, contribute to the greatly increased risk of HIV/AIDS.

The 8th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP8), which took place at Colombo, Sri Lanka, from 19-23 August 2007, provided a unique opportunity to share new ideas and the results of effective programmatic efforts, which have an impact on the epidemic. The theme for the Congress was ' Waves of Change, Waves of Hope', signifying the many things in motion, while taking into account milestones in the past and creating new ones for the future. The theme also implied that there is much to be done on this issue. The ICAAP8 aimed to form meaningful and sustainable partnerships between stakeholders; share expertise, experiences, lessons learnt and best practices; and to promote equal access to prevention, support, treatment and care for all people.

United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime at ICAAP8: In the context of HIV/AIDS, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is entrusted with the exclusive responsibility for coordinating and providing effective leadership in the areas of injecting drug use, prison settings and trafficking in human beings.
