UNODC is cosponsor of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS - UNAIDS

Additional Secretary, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment Inaugurates a Training Programme on "Specialized Care for Children Infected and Affected by HIV/AIDS" in Shillong, Meghalaya.

Dr. Sundeep Khanna, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJE), inaugurated the "Specialized care for children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS" on 17 March 2008. The event was held at the UNODC Northeast field office in Shillong, Meghalaya. Principal Secretary Social Welfare, Mr. V. S Oberoi and Deputy Director Social Welfare, Ms. BB Nalle were also present at the inaugural.

Dr. Sundeep Khanna, shared information regarding the Ministry's perspective and programmes for the infected and affected children. He also expressed his happiness on the on-going collaboration between MSJE and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on implementing various schemes of the Ministry.

In total 27 representatives from 13 different NGOs from Meghalaya attended the programme. They were further exhorted by Dr. Khanna to avail this excellent opportunity of increasing their skills in dealing with the problems of HIV infected and affected children.

Mr. VS Oberoi in his speech assured complete support to the various NGOs working in the field and stressed the need for Government-NGO participation for the larger benefit of the community.

This training programme was organized by the Regional Resource Training Centre (RRTC) Northeast (NE) II, Nagaland under the overall banner of National Institute of Social Defense.

Representivatives from various NGOs working on HIV/AIDS prevention participated in this training. Dr. Sandeep Khanna's visit was coordinated by UNODC Northeast field office in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare, Meghalaya.

Dr. Sundeep Khanna also inaugurated a sensitization programme on "Rehabilitation services for the persons with disabilities for medical and allied professionals" held at North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS). The programme was attended by Mr. WMS Pariat, Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya and other dignitaries.

Kolkata and NEIGRIHMS in Hotel Pinewood. This event was attended by the Principal Secretary Health, Mr. A K Srivastava, the Additional Director General Health and Director of NEIGRIHMS, Dr. R N Salhan, Secretary Social Welfare, Ms. Lawanda Diengdoh, Director Social Welfare, Mr. CCM Mihsil, Director NIOH, Dr. Ratnesh Kumar, UNODC North East Coordinator Dr Pushkar Singh and other officials. The guests were also briefed about the programmes, initiatives and activities undertaken by UNODC in the Northeast.
