United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Regional Office for South Asia in collaboration with the Government of the Republic of Maldives has conducted the National Training Programme to address HIV prevention amongst incarcerated substance users from 24 - 27 December 2007 in Maafushi prison complex, Maldives. Total 27 number of participants comprising the senior/middle level officials drawn from Ministry of Home Affairs, Prisons, Police, Drug Control Programme, local stakeholders, Non-governmental organisations participated in the National Training Programme. The inauguration session was attended by Dr. Abdulla Waheed, Deputy Minister of Home and Gender, Dr. Abdul Azeez Yoosuf, Deputy Minister of Health, Government of Maldives amongst others.

Senior functionaries from Ministry of Home, Gender, Health and experts from the civil society contributed as resource person in the training programme. It was heartening to see the senior Ministers and policy makers of Government of the Republic of Maldives generating thought provoking discussion as resource persons.

The participants expressed their interest to take this training programme to the level of prison inmates and other prison staff members. The participants of the training programme developed country specific module and work plan for rolling out prison intervention in Maldives.
