Police arrested 71 people in Male on drug charges last month

Police had arrested 71 people in Male' alone on drugs related charges during the last month, the Maldives Police Service has said.

A Police official said yesterday that 20 people had been arrested in Male' during the last week with the help of reports and information given by members of the public and special operations conducted by the Police. Seven others were arrested in Hulhu-Male' and Hulhule', the official said.

"Three of those arrested were women," the official said. "One of them was only 17 years old."

According to the Police, several cases of drug related offences had been reported as the New Year had begun. In addition they had also confiscated 74g of drugs during this month, Police said.

Police said that those who needed rehabilitation services to overcome their addiction were being handed over to the National Narcotics Control Bureau (NNCB). 25 people had been handed over the NNCB so far this year, the Police said.
