UNODC is cosponsor of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS - UNAIDS
Cosponsoring Partners: Inter-Country Consultation on HIV Prevention among Injecting Drug Users
The consultation was cosponsored by: The World Bank, UNODC, SIDA, DFID, AusAID and NACO. Each co-sponsor added value through their comparative advantages.
The World Bank drew upon its experiences of organizing a similar inter-regional consultation in Iran in 2006, working with key sectors to foster a multi-sector response to the epidemic, and partnering with bilateral agencies, policy-makers from the UN family, NGOs/CBOs and other stakeholders, and governments.
UNODC, based on the GTT recommendations and the UNAIDS division of labor, has the primary responsibility among UN partners for the prevention of HIV transmission among IDUs.
DFID, through its Challenge Fund, is working with NGOs to set up a network that will provide comprehensive services to IDUs across eight states in India.
SIDA and AUSAID support comprehensive services in the region.
NACO's objectives are to reduce the spread of HIV in India and strengthen India's capacity to respond to HIV and AIDS. NACO supports targeted interventions for IDUs. State AIDS Control Societies (SACS) of IDU affected states have budgets for needle exchange and substitution, and can share useful experiences with participants.
