Review of UNGASS goals in respect to precursor chemicals held at Colombo - Sri Lanka on 13th November 2007

Launch of Model VCC for industry and trade by Mr. Rajiv Walia, Project Coordinator, UNODC
A meeting was organized by the Regional Precursor Control Project for South and South West Asia, RAS H60 to review the progress made on goals relating to precursors agreed to at the 20th special session of the U.N. General Assembly (UNGASS) held in June 1998. UNGASS had called for significant progress towards reducing illicit drug production, trafficking and abuse worldwide within a ten-year time frame, i.e., by 2008.

At the 52nd session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs to be held in March 2008, progress on UNGASS goals will be the subject of a thematic debate in preparation for the high level segment in 2009.

The project had earlier prepared and distributed a country wise status paper on precursor related UNGASS goals.

The Project Coordinator identified the gaps for each member country and requested them to furnish further information within a month to enable the project to prepare a status of the entire region. The project will come out with a publication on the achievements set during UNGASS 1998.

The objective of this exercise is to assist member countries to take steps that are required to fulfill their obligations to the UNGASS goals and to prepare for the high level segment in 2009
