Mr. Vijayan Pavamani, Director Regional Resource Training Centre East passes away
India has lost a stalwart in the movement against drug addiction. Mr. Vijayan Pavamani, the founder of Calcutta Samaritans
passed away on Sunday 20
th August.
A graduate of the Calcutta Bible College, his contribution in drug abuse prevention began more than 30 years ago when he gave up a commercial career to begin a centre for the rehabilitation of drug addicts. He was remarkable for starting the first rehabilitation service in the eastern part of India.
Mr. Pavamani worked for children at risk as the Executive Director of Emmanuel Ministries. In this role, he founded a school for underprivileged street children, and a rescue and rehabilitation home for them.
His contributions to the social sector are numerous. Notable amongst them are the various papers he contributed nationally and international on the various social issues. His legacy is being ably carried forward by numerous 'children' at Calcutta Samaritans.
The UNODC Regional Office for South Asia joins his family and friends in mourning
a friend and able partner in our work in the region.
