Project CIRUS: Combined InteRdiction Unified Strategy for Iran

This project aims at strengthening the drug interdiction capacities of Iran's law enforcement bodies by increasing their ability to interdict drugs entering and exiting the I.R. of Iran. Accordingly, it provides a framework for interventions at the country's eastern and western borders, as well as at its international airports and ports (southern coast areas) where narcotics are smuggled by couriers and in freight. Finally, it will address the issue of the increased use of the international mail service for sending illicit drug abroad. A training component will enhance the in-country capability to make use of specialized intelligence-gathering and analysis. It will also spread this know-how among the different drug control agencies with a view to dismantling national and international drug trafficking organizations and networks. In addition, a pilot project will evaluate the effectiveness and cultural sustainability of scenting dogs in the I.R. of Iran.
