UNODC Publishes International Standards on Drug Use Prevention

13 March 2013 - In the past, drug prevention work was often limited to printing leaflets to warn young people about the dangers of illicit drugs. Such interventions often resulted in little behavioral change. Now, through scientific advances, drug prevention has come a long way. Science-based prevention strategies working with families, schools and communities can ensure that children and youth, especially the most marginalized and poor, grow and stay healthy and safe into adulthood and old age.

Fifty-sixth Session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs opens in Vienna

11 March 2013 - The Fifty-sixth session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) kicks off today with over 1,000 representatives from Member States and civil society, as well as high level speakers and government ministers from across the globe. Policy-makers will meet in Vienna from 11 to 15 March to discuss issues ranging from international cooperation in combating drugs to public health and safety concerns, including the threat of new psychoactive substances.

Iranian youth gets the facts about drugs

As part of its campaign to raise awareness about the major challenge that illicit drugs represents to society as a whole, especially to the young, UNODC published a series of 8 posters in Farsi including information on the physical and psychological effects of drugs. The posters showed the impact of Opium, Heroin and Crack Heroin, Cocaine, Methamphetamine, Ecstasy, Cannabis in addition to Cigarettes and Alcohol.

Placing health and welfare at the heart of drug policy

25 January 2013 - The key reason why countries decided to set up the UN drug control system was to reduce the public's exposure to the harmful health effects of drug use. Having witnessed the devastating effects of previous drug use epidemics, such as the Chinese opium epidemic of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, policymakers from across the world were convinced that a comprehensive international system was needed to protect their populations.

UN programme offers assistance in Protection of Valuable Cultural Property of Iran

Trafficking of cultural property represents a big source of earnings for organized criminal groups. It is also becoming an important source for laundering the proceeds of crime, and as such, it is a problem that affects all countries. Evidence points to the interconnectedness of transnational organized crime, with networks employing the same routes and modus operandi to move cultural property as they use to move drugs, illicit arms and other materials.
