Anti Narcotic Police and Customs Officers using the devices during the training session

Tehran, 17 May 2018 - The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in the Islamic Republic of Iran procured specialized devices for screening unknown suspected materials and provided a two-day training for personnel of the Anti‐Narcotics Police (ANP) and Customs Administration of the Islamic Republic of Iran on 15-16 May 2018.

The training aimed to familiarize the personnel of ANP and Customs with use of the specialized devices recently procured by UNODC for identification of drugs and precursors. The devices will strengthen the screening capacity of the Iranian Anti‐Narcotics Police Officers and Customs Personnel at the field level.

Iran remains as one of the major transit route for trafficking of drugs from Afghanistan as well as smuggling of precursors into it. UNODC has built a strong partnership with the Government of Iran in several areas including the capacity building for the Iranian law enforcements and has been providing technical assistance to the Iranian Government in their fight against illicit trafficking of drugs and precursors.

This training along with the devices provided by UNODC will contribute to increasing the screening capacity of Iranian Anti-Narcotics Police at check-points and Customs personnel at the border crossings.  The participants of this training developed knowledge on how and when to utilize the special screening devices at the time of encountering unknown substances. The device provided will be useful in ANP and Customs daily work and will enable prompt identification of several narcotics and their related precursors chemicals.

The event was organized as part of the activities foreseen in the framework of the Sup-programme 1 "Border Management and Illicit Trafficking" of UNODC Country Partnership Programme (2015-2019) for the Islamic Republic of Iran through the generous donation of the Government of Japan.
