Footall teams from secondary schools and villages in Xaysettha district enjoyed participating in the 1st Vientiane Women's Union President's Cup at Khamphuangphet field in Vientiane last Saturday.

The event aimed to promote an anti-drug message, encourage participation in sports and boost solidarity.

The tournament was organized by the Vientiane Youth Centre for Health and Development in cooperation with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

The friendly competition also noted the 450th anniversary of Vientiane as the Lao capital in November and the Vientiane Party Congress to take place at the end of this year.

President of the centre, Ms Lamphoy Siakkhachanh said young people should be encouraged to steer clear of drugs and participate in sports and art activities in their free time. Ms Lamphoy said sports boost solidarity, friendship, and respect.

Eight men's and three women's teams from secondary schools competed in U-12 to U-15 matches, while teams from eight villages played in U-16 to U-20 games at the tournament. After the success of the event in Xaysettha district, the centre plans to organize similar tournaments in Sikhottabong district next month and Xaythany district in November.

Ms Lamphoy said the tournament also helped aspiring young footballers improve their skills and experience.

The centre organises regular activities for young people in Vientiane. The closing ceremony of the event was attended by Deputy Regional Director of UNODC, Mr Leik Boonwaat, and local officials.

The top scorers and first and second placed teams in each division received a trophy and sports equipment from Mr Volker Hofferbert from the German Football Federation.

In the final round of the tournament Nonkhor village beat Thatluangtay village 3-2,

Nakhuay lower secondary school men's team defeated Thatluang village, and Nakhuay lower secondary school women's team demolished Phonkeo village 8-0.
