Lao authorities admit substandard implementation of counter-human trafficking measures due to shortage of skilled personnel and budget. Laos' Deputy Minister for Labor and Social Welfare says his country's cooperation with Thailand in fighting transnational human trafficking across their common borders in the past year has resulted in the rescue of only 647 human-trafficking victims from Thailand. Lao officials also acknowledge delay in supplying Thailand with legally registered workers from Laos. As a measure to prevent Lao youths from entering Thailand illegally to look for work but fall victim of human trafficking instead, Thailand had agreed to accept some 50,000 registered workers from Laos.
