Seminar Addresses Public Safety in the Federal District and Surrounding Municipalities

September 29, 2011 - Discuss violence and crime rates and their social dynamics, as well as actions to improve the management of public policies for violence prevention and public safety in the Integrated Region of Economic Development of the Federal District, RIDE- DF. These are the main objectives of the Seminar "Public Safety Management in the Federal District and Surrounding Municipalities", held this Friday, September 30, from 9:00 am, in the Biology Auditorium of the University of Brasilia, UnB.

According to recent surveys, the RIDE-DF is one of the most violent regions in the country. This reality is not new, and although homicides have dropped in recent years, indicators of urban violence are still alarming.

Earlier this year, the 19 municipalities from Goiás that take part in the RIDE-DF recorded homicide rate of 70 cases per 100 000 inhabitants, nearly three times the national average.

According to the Integrated Office of Management of the Federal District and Surrounding Municipalities, the cities of Aguas Lindas, Cidade Ocidental, Luziânia, Novo Gama and Valparaiso concentrate 71% of homicides of the RIDE-DF.

Throughout the Seminar studies on the management of public safety in the region and vulnerability indicators will be presented. The Departments of Public Safety of the Federal District and Goiás, in turn, will present the latest information on crime and violence in their respective areas. Finally, the national president of the Central Única das Favelas (CUFA), Preto Zezé, will discuss experiences of violence and drug use prevention, involving young people from vulnerable areas.

Also during the seminar, members of the Jovem de Expressão Program, which is being implemented in the cities of Ceilândia and Sobradinho, will make a dance presentation. The Jovem de Expressão Program is a project of Caixa Seguros Group, CUFA - DF, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Azulim Cultural Group, and aims at the changing of behaviors, attitudes and practices for reducing the exposure to violence, among youngsters between 18 and 29 years.

The Seminar "Public Safety Management in the Federal District and Surrounding Municipalities" is implemented by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in partnership with the University of Brasília and the Caixa Seguros Group.
