Implementation of the Doha Declaration focus of upcoming 2015 UN Crime Commission

Vienna,  18 May 2015 - The 24th Session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) will take place from 18-22 May 2015, in Vienna, Austria. This year's meeting follows the recently-held  13th Crime Congress in Qatar, with the CCPCJ aiming to advance the implementation of the resultant  Doha Declaration  and discuss how this can contribute to the rule of law and sustainable development in the UN's post-2015 agenda.

There are currently nine draft resolutions before the CCPCJ on subjects as varied as trafficking in cultural property and the treatment of prisoners that were also the focus of the Doha Declaration. By passing these resolutions, the Crime Commission is seeking to ensure that the essential elements of the Doha Declaration become fully operational in order to benefit countries.

Each year, the CCPCJ attracts hundreds of representatives from Member States, civil society organizations, and the media. In 2015, over 40 high-profile  side events and special exhibits  will be held on the margins of the Crime Commission. Discussions are set to cover an array of topics, including the smuggling of migrants, foreign terrorist fighters, the radicalization of youth, cooperation between governments and civil society organizations, wildlife and forest crime, the recovery of stolen assets, and cybercrime, among many others.

The Crime Commission runs for five days and starts on Monday, 18 May, with opening speeches from UNODC's Executive Director, Yury Fedotov, the Chair of the CCPCJ and the Permanent Representative of Mexico to the UN in Vienna, Luis Alfonso de Alba, and other high-level representatives.
