UNODC attends ceremony destruction of 25,000 firearms

 

Buenos Aires, 15  August 2016 - On 12 August in Tenasis steel mill in the city of Campana in Buenos Aires province, the la Agencia Nacional de Materiales Controlados (ANMAC - former RENAR) (National Agency for Controlled Materials), under the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights held the destruction of 25,000 weapons from the crime. The material was in judicial deposits of the provinces of Buenos Aires, Santa Fe and Mendoza.

 

The event was supervised by the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Germán Garavano, and the head of ANMAC, Natalia Gambaro, accompanied by the Minister of Security, Patricia Bullirch, Rosario Regional Fiscal, Jorge Baclini, the Coordinator of the UNODC Global Programme on Weapons to Latin America and the Caribbean, Lucía Gómez Consoli, as well as civil society and authorities of several of the country's security forces.

 

The firearms were destroyed by the grinding and melting method, recognized as one of the most effective and cleanest methods, which guarantees the total destruction of weapons, making it impossible to reuse their parts and components.

This preventive measure carried out by ANMAC - to quickly capture and destroy the firearms seized and disabled, located in different judicial deposits in the country in order to avoid diversion to the illicit market - is one of many actions that the agency have been performing in order to combat and to eradicate the illicit trafficking in firearms, their parts and components.
