Drug prevention treatment and rehabilitation
Drug dependence is preventable and treatable, but needs a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach including both medical-pharmacological and psychosocial interventions. Different subtypes of addicted individuals and different socio-behavioural features of drug dependence require differentiated treatment strategies. A better understanding of what makes individuals vulnerable to addiction is needed. A special effort is needed to reach youth that are not responding to prevention programmes, drug dependent individuals who are not motivated to attend treatment facilities, non-responders to treatment who continue to abuse illicit drugs and those patients who easily relapse into substance abuse.
