Specialized Workshop on the Prevention and Fight against Terrorism based on the UNODC Digest of Terrorist Cases

12 to 15 July 2011- "Specialized Workshop on the Prevention and Fight against Terrorism based on the UNODC Digest of Terrorist Cases" organized by the Terrorism Prevention Branch of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC / TPB) in collaboration with the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism of the Organization of American States (OAS/SMS/CICTE) and under the auspices of the Government of Antigua and Barbuda.

The principal objective of this specialized workshop was to train national officials, mainly law enforcement officials, finance analysts and officers from the security sector of Antigua and Barbuda on the universal legal framework against terrorism, with emphasis on comparative experiences in the investigation of concrete cases of terrorism and its financing, special investigative techniques and the mechanism of international cooperation in criminal matters, based on the concrete experiences gathered in the "UNODC Digest of Terrorist Cases".

During the four-day workshop, high-level experts from Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States shared with the audience their concrete experiences and best practices in the prevention, investigation and prosecution of terrorist acts, as well as on special investigation techniques and international cooperation in criminal matters, among other topics contained in the agenda of the event. Once more, the event was enriched by the contributions and perspectives provided by the representatives of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and INTERPOL, UNODC key partners in its efforts to assist Member States in the Caribbean Basin region to prevent and fight against terrorism.

On a hands-on approach, part of the working sessions were exclusively devoted to the analysis of a case study during which the 22 national officials had the opportunity to solve different practical hypotheses concerning the investigation of acts of terrorism and its financing in order to address the theoretical issues since a practical perspective.
