When Ahmed's father passed away, he was forced to drop out of school to provide for his mother "Um Ahmed" and his sister Buthaina. According to Ahmed, he was working as a fare collector on a public microbus, at the age of 15, when one day the bus driver accidentally killed a motorcyclist driving the wrong way on the road. Fearing jail, the driver escaped. Ahmed, who was unconscious, was taken by the police and tried for stealing the microbus, driving without a license, and accidental manslaughter. He was eventually sentenced to one year of correctional detention.

- Jordanian and Iraqi Officials Receive Anti-Human Trafficking Training

It is customary among many such families to offer drugs such as hashish to their guests at wedding ceremonies as a form of recreation. Abdul Rahman's family was no exception. On the evening of a family member's wedding ceremony, 18-year-old Abdul Rahman was tasked with providing the drugs for the evening and was unfortunate enough to be caught by the authorities. He was sentenced to three years in Juvenile Correctional Institution in Marg, Cairo, Egypt.

- UNODC Builds Capacities of Egyptian Officials on UNCAC Review

Twenty-two Egyptian officials from the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of State for Administrative Development, the Public Prosecution, the National Security Authority and the Administrative Control Agency gathered on 13 August 2012, to attend a four-day workshop organized by UNODC in cooperation with the Egyptian Government at the Marriott Hotel in Cairo, Egypt.

- Evidence Confirms Alarming Concentrated HIV Epidemic among Injecting Drug Users in Libya

26 June 2012, Tripoli - UNODC, UNAIDS, WHO, the European Union and the National Center for Disease Control met to hear the new evidence confirming the suspected concentrated HIV epidemic among people who inject drugs in Libya, and to confer on the identified priorities for a strengthened and multi-sectorial national response during the Scientific and Advocacy Symposium on HIV/AIDS.
