Outline And Objectives

This project was launched in 2003 and provides the framework for UNODC technical assistance to Member States in the implementation of the international legal regime against terrorism. The ongoing project provides the operational framework for UNODC interventions and services for supporting the implementation of the legal regime against terrorism, in pursuance of UNODC thematic programme on Terrorism Prevention and the UNODC medium-term strategy for the period 2012-2015.

  • Strengthen the capacity of national criminal justice systems to implement the international legal instruments against terrorism in compliance with the rule of law.
  • Incorporate their provisions into national legislation.
  • Achieve ratification of all these instruments.

Through these services, the project contributes to the implementation of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and the relevant resolutions of the Security Council pertaining to counter-terrorism.

Key Achievements Since 2003

A total of 67 ratifications of United Nations Conventions have been undertaken 15 Arab States.  Technical assistance was provided by UNODC to the Member States of the region in legislative drafting and capacity building in the fields of terrorism prevention, money laundering, financing of terrorism and using the Internet for terrorism purposes as well as prevention, investigation, prosecution and adjudication of terrorist acts.  The main beneficiaries are relevant officials from ministries of justice and interior as well as prosecutors.
