UNODC further enhances capacities of Palestinian Civil Police
With a view to empowering the Palestinian Civil Police to undertake its investigations more effectively, and within the framework of UNODC ongoing project activities in the State of Palestine, UNODC convened an expert group meeting to support the development of the Palestinian Civil Police's forensic document examination capacity, on 24-27 March 2014 in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
The objective of the Meeting was to review a draft training manual on forensic document examination and a draft laboratory procedures manual as well as to discuss existing Arabic handwriting training programmes. These objectives were successfully accomplished through bringing together international experts in forensic document examination and Arabic handwriting with participants from Australia, Canada, the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia, Egypt, Jordan, New Zealand, the State of Palestine, the United Arab Emirates (Abu Dhabi), and the United States of America.
The meeting helped ensure that all training and related materials developed were reviewed and approved by an international panel of forensic experts and aligned as far as possible with relevant international standards and practices. All participants contributed to group discussions and were kindly provided with a tour of the Abu Dhabi Police Headquarters Forensic Evidence Laboratory.
This meeting is aligned with the UNODC Regional Programme and is a part of the project entitled " Forensic Human Resource and Governance Development Assistance for the Palestinian National Authority " that is being implemented by UNODC in partnership with the Palestinian Ministries of Justice and Interior, with the generous funding of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD), Canada.
