UNODC and the Egyptian Ministry of Justice to initiate the development of a National Strategy to Combat Violence against Women (VAW)

Responding to the specific needs of the Egyptian society in preventing and combating violence against women and girls in Egypt,the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Regional Office for the Middle east and North Africa and the Egyptian Ministry of Justice hold a four-day workshop under the title "Towards the Development of a National Strategy to Combat Violence against Women". The purpose of the four-day workshop is to conduct high level consultations among relevant stakeholders and introduce best practice methodologies with a targeted goal of initiating the development of a national action plan to combat violence against women in Egypt. Furthermore, the workshop will serve as fundamental groundwork in the development of future legislation and approaches to address violent crimes perpetrated against Egyptian women and girls. The workshop will also contribute directly to the implementation of the "Safe Cities" initiative in Cairo which aims at making Cairo free of violence against women and girls. This initiative was launched UN Women in partnership with UNODC, UNDP, UNFPA, UNHABITAT and UNICEF, in addition to relevant ministries and civil society organizations .
Participants will include representatives from the Ministry of Justice, prosecutors, judges, forensic practitioners, and representatives from the Ministry of Interior notably from the newly established Unit on Violence against Women, as well as representatives from civil society organizations, the National Council for Women's Rights and international experts.
Media are invited to attend the Opening Session of the Workshop at 9:30 a.m., on Monday 16 December 2013, which will be addressed by H.E. Counselor Adel Abdel Hamid, Minister of Justice, Mr. Massoud Karimipour, Regional Representative for the Middle East and North Africa, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Counselor Ali Awad Saleh, Presidential Advisor for Constitutional Affairs, Dr. Sakina Fouad, President's Advisor for Women's Affairs, Counselor Ahmed Elsergany, Assistant Minister of Justice for Human Rights, a high-level representative of the Ministry of Interior and Ambassador Mervat Tallawy, President of the National Council for Women, will also attend.
Media are also welcome to attend the Closing Session of the Workshop at at 9:30 a.m., on Thursday, 19 December 2013 . The session will witness the launching of the action plan to combat violence against women.
