Information Technology Service
UNODC's Information Technology Service (ITS) specializes in the development, deployment and support of software applications for use by Member States in a range of UNODC's focus areas.
Over the years, ITS has acquired broad and recognized experience in helping governments to build efficient, comprehensive and tailor-made IT solutions. Each ITS project is driven by Member States' needs and includes the evaluation of existing resources, gap analysis, and the provision of IT infrastructure where such infrastructure or systems do not exist.
ITS projects are designed in line with the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), particularly Goal 8, 'to develop a global partnership for development', which includes 'making available the benefits of new technologies - especially information and communications technologies'.
Over recent years, ITS has introduced the government office "go" family of software products. These products are part of UNODC's strategic response to crime, particularly serious and organized crime. The ''go'' family includes integrated investigative case management and intelligence analysis tools for FIUs, law enforcement, investigative, intelligence, regulatory, prosecution and asset recovery agencies, and later for courts and other government agencies involved in the criminal justice process. All the software products include multi-faceted integration, and can function as "stand alone" applications or together to form one global system, depending on the needs of the requesting Member State. The application of systems able to interface with each other encourages inter-agency and cross border cooperation and information sharing at the national, regional and international levels.
ITS does not use any external resources. All the software products and projects are developed in-house. Consequently, the institutional memory and the know-how is preserved and reinforced over the years, costs are minimized, and risks generated by the involvement of external third-parties are eliminated. Additionally UNODC's software products are not developed for individual sites and needs, they are deployed in multiple locations and therefore benefit from the experience of multiple users. The products are continually enhanced through the exchange of user experience utilizing on-line forums and user group meetings.
