Judges, Magistrates, legal experts meet to consider draft sentencing guidelines for criminal trials

Judges, Magistrates and Area Court Judges serving within the Federal Capital Territory as well as prosecutors and members of the Nigerian Bar Association gathered on 26 - 27 April 2016 to review seven draft sentencing guidelines for criminal trials. The draft guidelines cover a wide range of offences including corruption, homicide and violence against the person. Others cover offences against the State, public order, morality and property offences. Honourable Justice Ishaq Usman Bello, Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory has committed to issuing the sentencing guidelines in a practice direction when finalised. The guidelines will be applicable to trials in all courts of the Territory. The two-day roundtable was attended by 122 participants composed of 36 females and 86 males and was jointly organised by the Support to Anti-corruption in Nigeria and Support to Justice Sector in Nigeria projects implemented by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
