Drug Demand Reduction, Prevention and Treatment

The desired impact of Sub-Programme III (SPIII) is to ensure increased access to quality drug treatment and HIV prevention treatment and care services for vulnerable populations, with a particular focus on women and children who use illicit drugs an prison populations.

As per the outcomes and outputs outlined below, the UNODC Country Office in Pakistan (COPAK) will work with the Government of Pakistan n (GOP) to enhance the capacity of counterparts to deliver evidence based drug use prevention, drug prevention treatment and HIV prevention treatment and care services.

In 2013, COPAK conducted a national drug use survey which revealed a high prevalence of rug using population in Pakistan, and therefor there is an overwhelming  need for implementation of drug prevention, drug dependence treatment and care interventions, including low threshold services in the country. Survey also detected high prevalence of HIV risk behaviors among people who inject drugs.

As there is a rapid expansion of the HIV epidemic among people who inject drugs (PWID), calling for urgent intervention to contain HIV transmission among both PWID and their intimate partners, there is a considerable need to scale up HIV prevention, treatment and care services, recommended by the WHO, UNAIDS and UNODC, to prevent further transmission of HIV and other blood borne infections among PWID and their intimate partners and children in community and in prison settings.

Several studies have indicated that HIV is prevalent among prison population therefore DP-III will facilitate to increase access to HIV prevention, treatment and care services for prisoners and prison stand to prevent further transmission of HIV and other blood borne diseases.
