Training of Law Enforcement Officials on Communication and Engagement with Drug Users and Vulnerable Populations. Police Training College, Sihala

Islamabad, 21 September 2017 - UNODC Country Office Pakistan Sub-Programme III organized a 'Training of Law Enforcement Officials on Communication and Engagement with Drug Users and Vulnerable Populations' 19-21 September 2017 at the Police Training College, Sihala, Islamabad. The training was supported by the European Union.

The objective of the training was to develop a better understanding among police officials of their role in supporting public health when working with drug users and other vulnerable populations. Understanding drug use, getting familiar with public health responses and learning how to build sustainable partnerships with public health practitioners, police officials can better protect communities and themselves from the risks of drug use and infectious diseases. 

The training was organized in collaboration with the Police Department, Punjab. Forty-seven police officials from twenty-one districts of Punjab province participated in the training. UNODC staff and a consultant conducted the training based on the toolkit for law enforcement officials on enhancing communication and engagement with drug users and other vulnerable populations.

The Commandant of the Police Training College appreciated UNODC for organizing training on this important subject. He gave certificates to the participants and urged them to apply the knowledge they have gained during the training in their work. He also said that the police help drug users to get treatment for their dependence. Improving partnerships at the community level results better access to health care services and increases trust in police.
