UNODC Strategy on Addressing the Global Prison Crisis

In response to the crisis of the prison systems worldwide, UNODC has developed a comprehensive Strategy for the period 2015-2017, which objectives are: a) Reduce the scope of imprisonment; b) Improve prison conditions; and c) Support social reintegration programs for the people deprived of their liberty, including initiatives of post-release support.
As the background of the Strategy, between 2010 and 2015 UNODC supported more than 60 countries in developing and implementing policies and projects on criminal justice. Among those countries is the Republic of Panama, in which UNODC has supported the prison reform process since 2010, providing technical assistance in different areas such as: capacity-building, provision of training to prison staff, social reintegration programs for detainees with special emphasis on particularly vulnerable groups, and measures for the prevention of corruption.
